What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is a weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the subjects registered by a student in a semester. It is one of the most common grading systems used by universities and colleges to evaluate a student's academic performance for a specific term.

How is SGPA Calculated?

To calculate SGPA, you need two pieces of information for each subject:

  • Credit Points: The weightage assigned to the course (e.g., 2, 3, or 4 credits).
  • Grade Points: The numerical value assigned to the letter grade you achieved (e.g., O=10, A=9).

SGPA Formula

The SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) formula calculates your average performance for a semester by summing the product of each subject's grade points and credits, then dividing by the total credits: SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) / Total Credits, giving more weight to higher-credit courses. The formula is:

SGPA = Σ (Ci × Gi) / Σ Ci

Where:

  • Ci = Credit points for the i-th course.
  • Gi = Grade points obtained in the i-th course.
  • Σ = Sum of all values.

Example Calculation

Let's assume a student has taken 3 subjects in a semester:

Subject Credits (Ci) Grade Grade Points (Gi) Ci × Gi
Mathematics 4 A+ 9 36
Physics 3 A 8 24
Chemistry 3 B+ 7 21
Total 10 (Σ Ci) 81 (Σ Ci × Gi)

SGPA = 81 / 10 = 8.1

SGPA to Percentage

Many institutions use a conversion formula to estimate percentage from SGPA. A widely used formula in India (e.g., by VTU, KTU) is:

Percentage = (SGPA - 0.75) × 10

However, calculate percentage according to your specific university's guidelines as formulas may vary (e.g., (SGPA * 10) - 7.5).

Why Use this Tool?

Calculating SGPA manually can be time-consuming and prone to errors, especially when dealing with multiple subjects. This free online SGPA calculator simplifies the process by allowing you to quickly input your credits and grades, providing an accurate SGPA instantly. It's a handy tool for students looking to monitor their academic performance throughout the semester.
